SYLLABUS INFORMATION - MUSIC

New Syllabuses

Piano, Clarinet and Saxophone

The 2009 Manual of Syllabuses sees the release of three new syllabuses: Piano, Clarinet and Saxophone. These syllabuses will be available for examination in all States from 2009.
Each of these syllabuses has been subjected to a comprehensive review of Manual List repertoire and Technical Work.

Clarinet

Substantial revisions have been made to the Clarinet syllabus, with the addition of a Preliminary Grade and Certificate of Performance examination, as well as greater scope for the examination of bass clarinet.
The Board has published new materials to support this syllabus (see PUBLICATIONS).
The following publications may be used in preparing for examination with this syllabus:
Clarinet Series 3 (Preliminary Grade to Grade 4)
Clarinet Series 3 Handbooks and Recordings (Preliminary Grade to Grade 4)

Saxophone

The Saxophone syllabus has undergone a considerable amount of revision. In response to public feedback, this syllabus shifted its focus from French music of the early twentieth century towards contemporary composition for the instrument, with a strong focus on Australian repertoire. This syllabus also now includes a Certificate of Performance examination as the capping examination of Level 2.
The Board has published new materials to support this syllabus (see PUBLICATIONS).
The following publications may be used in preparing for examination with this syllabus:
Saxophone Series 2 (Alto and Tenor Grade 1 to Grade 4)
Saxophone Series 1 (Alto and Tenor First Grade to Fourth Grade)
Saxophone Technical Work (2008)

Please Note: We have recently been notified of an error in the Saxophone Technical Work Book, which persists through all major and minor broken chords (pages 48–51). There is a group of four notes missing from each of these. This will be corrected in the next printing of this publication. In the meantime, AMEB(WA) examiners will be asked to accept these technical requirements in either their correct form or the form given in the TWB.

Piano

The Technical Work component of the Piano syllabus has been revised comprehensively and is now more logically organised. The Manual List repertoire of this syllabus has also been subject to a wide-ranging revision, with an emphasis now placed on the best of modern publications for the instrument. Users of the Manual are invited to refer to the respective syllabuses for further information.
The Board has published new materials to support this syllabus (see PUBLICATIONS).

BWV numbers

This guide is accessible from the main Federal Office page www.ameb.edu.au, and you will receive clarification of the BWV numbers in the 2009 Manual.

MUSICIANSHIP AND THEORY

New Set Work resources
The Federal Board has not committed to producing Analytical Notes for the new Set Works that were announced in the 2008 Manual of Syllabuses. As a service to teachers, an extensive annotated bibliography of materials to support the new Set Works will be available from the Federal Office website in late January 2009.

MUSICIANSHIP

New Set Works 2009
Fifth Grade
Schubert’s Erlkönig will be examined in the key of G minor and candidates are advised to purchase the work in that key. The Schott catalogue number on page 41 of the 2009 Manual of Syllabuses is for the song in the key of F minor and should not be cited in purchasing this work.
Examination questions on Vaughan Williams’ The vagabond will not be set in a way that will require key-specific responses. Accordingly, no specific edition of this song (or the song cycle from which it is drawn) is required for study. The order number shown on page 41 of the 2009 Manual of Syllabuses may be ignored.

MUSIC CRAFT

The Federal Board authorised a number of changes to be made to the syllabus for Level 1Music Craft, which appears in this revised form in the 2009 Manual of Syllabuses.

The most significant changes to this syllabus affect:
Aural tests: Examination writers now have the liberty to set a variable number of examination questions on the areas of competence in the aural section of Music Craft examinations. This change will mean that candidates will be assessed through a representative sample of questions and should alleviate concerns about the timing of aural examinations.
Non-examinable material: In order to alleviate some of the workload concerns of candidates in Grade 4 Music Craft written examinations, the Federal Board has declared some of the competence areas in Grade 4 ‘non-examinable’. Knowledge of these areas will be assumed for candidates progressing to Grade 5 Music Craft, and will continue to appear in the Board’s publications for Music Craft. Questions in these areas will not, however, be asked in examination.
Candidates:
• will not be required to recognise or write notes in the tenor clef; will not be required to write the scale degrees over the notes of a given tune prior to transposing it (though may do so if it assists them);
• will only be required to use the root position of the dominant seventh in the completion of a partially completed figured bass, although they will continue to have to recognise all inversions of the dominant seventh in harmonic analysis questions;
• are not required to demonstrate the ability to write music that modulates to the dominant or relative major/minor key but are required to show that they can recognise that such modulation has occurred;
• will not be required to answer questions on the human voice as a solo or ensemble instrument in art song, opera and popular song, to distinguish between recitative and aria or to describe the structure of popular song form.
• For further information refer to pages 20 – 29 of the 2009 Manual of Syllabuses.

NEW CLARINET AND SAXOPHONE SYLLABUSES

The 2009 Manual of Syllabuses features new syllabuses for clarinet and saxophone, which are available for examination from 2009. Candidates and teachers may also prepare for examination with the old syllabuses, shown in the 2008 Manual of Syllabuses. No combination of these syllabuses is permitted. The old clarinet and saxophone syllabuses may be withdrawn after a period of evaluation. In the event that these syllabuses are to be withdrawn, a year’s notice of the intention to withdraw them from examination will be given.

CLARINET (NEW SYLLABUS)

Corrections to Manual of Syllabuses 2009 - Clarinet

Second Grade, List C (p. 248): Spiewak’s Gavotte from Pastiche has been included in error in this list. This work is examinable at Third Grade level (see p. 249 of the 2009 Manual of Syllabuses).

SAXOPHONE (NEW SYLLABUS)

Corrections to Manual of Syllabuses 2009 - Saxophone

Fifth Grade, Section II. Studies and Pieces requirements (p. 274): The text directly under this heading does not reflect the restructuring of this syllabus to remove List D from Fifth Grade to produce congruence with other woodwind syllabuses. The text for this section should read: ‘The candidate is required to present a well-balanced programme of three works of contrasting styles and tempi, drawn from lists A, B, and C (Fifth Grade only) or of four works of contrasting styles and tempi, drawn from Lists A, B, C, and D (Sixth Grade to Eighth Grade)’
Similarly, the text directly under the Fifth Grade section of this syllabus is incorrect (foot of page 274). This text should read: ‘Three works of contrasting styles and tempi are to be chosen, one from each of Lists A, B, and C. Two Extra List pieces are required.’
Fourth Grade, List B Alto: This listing is incomplete. The following arrangement is permitted to be used in this list: BACH, J.S. arr COCKCROFT. Air on the G string from My favourite alto saxophone concert pieces (Reed Music).
Fourth Grade, List B Tenor: The listing for the Bach Air on the G string is incorrect. The listing should be: BACH, J.S. arr COCKCROFT. Air on the G string from My favourite tenor saxophone concert pieces (Reed Music).
First Grade, List B Tenor: Brahms’ Lullaby has been included here in error. This work in this arrangement from this publication is permitted to be examined in First Grade List C Alto.
